Brow Magic: Best brows for your face shape

smiling woman with eyes closed and bright multicolored hair

We’ve heard it before – the eyes are the window to the soul. But, honestly, we don’t think the eye has anything on the eyebrow. A brow can shape a face, give it expression, and – done right – compliment a face overall. The trick is to look at the big picture – which, in this case, is the shape of your face. When determining the best brow shape for your face – whether it be arched brows, rounded brows, or straight brows – experts like Kelley Baker will tell you to identify your face shape first. Think of it as a game-changing haircut. Giving your eyebrows the right volume and shape can enhance your eyes and facial assets, just like a great haircut can transform your locks.

In this article, we will examine the common face shapes and how to determine yours. We’ll also spill on which brow shape complements each face shape – PLUS, give tips on which tools that can help you achieve different brow shapes. So, are you ready for some Kelley Baker secrets for putting your best brow forward? Thought so – let’s dive in.

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE THE BEST BROW SHAPE FOR YOUR FACE?

Eyebrow care at home can be tricky if you don’t know what you’re doing, and since we always advocate putting your best brow forward, we’re here to warn you away from these common mistakes. Let’s start with the question we hear most often – how often should you pluck your eyebrows? Honestly, it’s really easy to get carried away with tweezers, so we actually recommend you try not to pluck between your waxing treatments.

Another common question regarding how to maintain eyebrows is when to trim between appointments. And the answer is – never! So, just put the scissors down and wait until your next brow appointment.

And finally, please, please don’t dye your eyebrows at home. Performing a DIY dye job on your eyebrows can result in disaster, not to mention potential damage if you do not use a professional, salon-quality formula. There are plenty of other ways to define your brows with high-quality products – which we’ll tell you about in a bit – until you can get back to the salon.

COMMON FACE SHAPES

There are five common face shapes: round, oval, heart, square, and long. Although you may have characteristics of more than one, most of us favor one face shape more than others. We will be breaking down each face shape next, including what features can help you identify yours. You can also try this easy hack to figure out which face shape you favor: Pull your hair back from your face and stand before a mirror. Using a lip or eye pencil, trace your face in the mirror. We found closing one eye helps!

BEST BROW SHAPE FOR ROUND FACE

A round face is equally long from forehead to chin and from ear to ear. It does not have any sharp points and includes a rounded jaw and chin. The best brow for a round face is one with an arch. An arched eyebrow will elongate the face, give some lift to the eye area, and add more definition to the face overall. Keep the arches soft and angled, as a rounded brow shape will just round out the face even more. We suggest brushing your brows up in a gentle, angled arch and using our Kelley Baker Clear Brow Setting Gel to keep strands in place.

BEST BROW SHAPE FOR OVAL FACE

The characteristics of an oval face are a forehead that is wider than the chin and prominent cheekbones. So, if your face is wider at the forehead and narrows toward the bottom with your cheekbones being the widest part of your face, you have the universally accepted oval face.  Kelley suggests a soft, angled brow as the best eyebrow shape for an oval face. Although either thin or thick brows are acceptable on an oval-shaped face, we always lean toward thicker because it appears more natural. Try the KB Tinted Brow Gel in blonde, brown or dark brown to give volume to oval-faced arches.

BEST BROW SHAPE FOR HEART FACE

A heart-shaped face comes by the name legitimately, in that the face resembles a heart. Love! This shape is characterized by a forehead and cheeks that are wider than the chin, which tends to be narrow or sharp. The best brow shape for a heart face is a softly rounded eyebrow. This shape will give the face a softer look and balance an angled chin. Creating a thicker, softly curved brow lends femininity and allows the lines of the face to flow – literally – into a beautiful heart shape.

BROW SHAPE FOR SQUARE FACE

A square face features a strong, wide jaw. The face is equally long and wide, and the width of the hairline and jawline are also even. A square-shaped face can find balance with a thicker brow, and the best brow shape for a square face is softly rounded or flat with a gentle arch. This thicker, softer brow gives depth to the top half of the face, while also softening the angles of the jaw. Kelley suggests using her Brow and Lash Growth serum to boost brow growth and create a thicker, softer brow.

BROW SHAPE FOR A LONG FACE

If your face is twice as long as it is wide, and your forehead, cheekbones, and chin are a similar width, you have a long-shaped face. With this shape, you want to shorten the overall look with your eyebrows, so the best brow shape for a long face is straight. By keeping them flat, the horizontal lines of the brow will counter the length. Plus, Kelley recommends elongating the tail of each eyebrow to make the eye area appear a bit wider.

Now that you’ve got the goods on which brow shapes complement each face shape, it’s time to put these insider tips to use! When determining your unique face shape, keep in mind that you could have characteristics of more than one. That’s perfectly fine – and perfectly normal. Based on what we’ve shared, you now see that your perfect brow shape should complement your face, not match it, so take these tips and apply them to your unique face.

Sometimes, the best place to start is OVER. So, if you have thin brows, try a brow thickening serum, like Kelley Baker’s Peptide Brow and Lash Serum. This clinically proven and cruelty-free formula stimulates keratin gene expression and improves overall brow – and lash, cuz we love those, too – density by 66% in 4 weeks! Then, once you have the canvas ready, you can begin creating YOUR perfect brow.
